A little bit of history
Groven Camping & Hyttegrend is located on a previous
grazing field of the Groven farm (located north of the camping area). The area
became a barrack town during the development of water power in the Tokke
watercourse which ended in the early 60s.
It was during this time the idea of a camping ground was born.
Groven Camping’s first season was the summer of 1965. At the time, a very modern sanitary facility
and tree small timber cottages were ready for the opening. Additional space for tents and caravans were
of course also present. During the next
few years a number of timber cabins were built and arranged as an old
fashion farmyard. All the material were
sourced from the Groven farm and the local area. The farmyard includes the typical houses;
trev, låve (barn), stabbur (storage house), loft, eldhus (smokhose) and
dobbelhytte (main house). The Loft is
more than 700 years old and most likely one of the oldest rental cabins in
Norway. The 10 larger cabins were ready
in 1974 and represents what we call “hyttegenda” and are fully equipped all
Since the mid-70s a number of small to medium size
developments have been done; kiosk, service area, playgrounds, bathing/swim
area, lounge, gamme, barbeque facilities and more. The last project was completed in the summer
of 2015; the motorhome park with sanitary- and disposal facilities.
Groven Camping & Hyttegrend’s location, by E134 and Åmot
(village), right between the east and the west of Norway, in addition to its
vicinity to the mountain areas Rauland and Haukelid, makes it an excellent
location for several purposes. Its
location by E134 and Åmot makes it a very practical stopover for people on the
road. For longer stays its vicinity to
the mountain areas Rauland (the gate to Hardangervidda) and Hukelid, opens up a
lot of possibilities. Within reach are
also location such as Rjukan, Gaustadtoppen, the Telemark Canal and Bø
The camping ground provides ample room for various
activities and play (see activities page). At the site there are also nice
